Personal summary
I’m an experienced user researcher having worked in the UK Higher Education Institutes, teaching principals of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User-Centred Design (UCD), Design Thinking and Prototyping (DTP) to students and young researchers. l uncover user pains and user needs by understanding them as users; their context and what creates value, purpose and meaning and utilising a broad range of research methods in doing so. I have designed, developed, lead, supervised and mentored students and researchers from the early stages of needfinding, through to hi-fidelity prototyping and testing in the wild and have been principle investigator or co-investigator on a number of successful government funded projects, which all obtained their met status. The stakeholders which I studied on a particular research project, people with low vision, when presented at top international HCI conference and public presentations, were highly commended and were given to be used for other projects. I have a background in HCI and use design thinking and prototyping to solve problems meaning I think contextually when I work. I’ve been working in diverse areas such as physical activity, accessibility, sustainability, and behaviour change. I have a unique set of skills which sets me apart from being a solely theoretical user researcher. I am a strong advocate for UCD and DTP principles and apply them to my research consistently. I pride myself on my ability to analyse complex information and data and then present it back in an easy to understand and visual format. I work well with designers, artists, vision scientists, engineers, and researchers from many other disciplines, they respect my background and I enjoy to pass this background onto more junior researchers, and to help up-skill them. Additionally, I lead the Cybersecurity, Privacy and Human-Centred Computing Research Section and Human-Centred Computing Research Area at the School of Computer Science and Informatics, Cardiff University. Moreover, as an external examiner for MSc in UX Engineering, Goldsmiths, London, I evaluate all forms of assessment ensuring fairness & consistency and comment on the teaching quality of modules related to UX engineering.
