Personal summary
I have more than seven years' experience in web copy editing, digital publishing, proofreading, translating (FR>EN, EN>FR) and data analysis. I also have two and half years’ experience teaching English in China. I am very excited about opportunities where I can apply my skills and this gives me the drive to do my very best. Firstly, as mentioned, I have experience working as a teacher in China. I did this for two and a half years during which I taught at all ages and in all establishments, including public and private primary schools, middle schools and for a full year I taught at undergraduate level at Nanjing University. Not only did I deliver classes, I was also entirely responsible for class content and curriculum creation. For this particular role I’d like to emphasise how much effort I put into creating fun and engaging content for my students. Indeed, as many of them were very much at beginner level in English, I had to be very creative in my approach. For example, introducing a fun activity or game with easy to follow rules/instructions as I was unable to communicate those in English. Coming up with new and fun content for every lesson was a lot of work but I really enjoyed seeing my students being so engaged, so this was very rewarding work and I really expanded my experience and skills in this educational environment. On my return to the UK I worked as a freelance translator for a while. I worked on a variety of projects, including: legal documents, documentary subtitling and translation, short-form content, and website content. I worked completely independently, proofreading my own work and being entirely responsible in keeping with strict deadlines. After I moved to London, I worked for 3 years as a web and publishing officer at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). I provided editorial support to teams compiling high profile reports, including complex market investigations reports. This involved proofreading, editing, and formatting the documents in Microsoft Word templates to a standard set out in the internal style guide. These reports were large (largest was over 3,000 pages) and included many appendices with technical data. I was then also responsible for converting the document into an accessible PDF and for publishing on the department’s webpages on GOV.UK, in keeping with plain English and accessibility rules. This also meant writing or editing web copy for the targeted audience to provide context to the document on the webpage in line with SEO best practice. I liaised with the authors throughout the process and always received excellent feedback not only for my editorial input but also for my willingness to help and availability. The latter was particularly important due to statutory deadlines fast approaching and the high standard expected of the case teams' work. My roles in the civil service were focussed on editing and proofreading content for members of the public as well as editing images/multimedia content with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. In addition to this I have experience working for a translation company, proofreading and formatting all translations from any language into English before these were sent on to clients, effectively acting as the final quality check in the translation process. I am a qualified proofreader and editor, and currently upgrading my translation skills with a personal tutor.
